The betting in many of the low-bet casino poker games is governed by what is known as spread limits. For example, if you're playing seven-card stud at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas, you'll likely be sitting in what is known as a 1-5 game. This means that the minimum a player can bet is $1 and the maximum a player can bet or raise is $5. Any raise must be equal to or larger than the bet that preceded it. Therefore, if the bet is $3 and you want to raise the hand, you must raise it by $3, $4, or $5. You may not raise by $2. In some games, the spread changes. Some Hold 'em games are 1-4-8, meaning that the limit is 1-4 on the first two betting rounds and 1-8 on the final two rounds.

These games are more rare and are often very high stakes betting structures. Beginners beware before entering these frequently expensive games. In Pot Limit, you may bet or raise any amount up to the total size of the pot. If there is $249 in the pot, you can raise to the level of $249, thus making the pot $498. The next player may raise by up to $498 if he chooses to do so.

In No-Limit poker, any player can raise up to the entire amount they have on the table. Remember, in casino poker you cannot go into your pocket for more cash during a hand. This means huge amounts can be risked in high stakes games - and often are. The main event at the World Series of Poker, the most prestigious poker tournament in the world, is No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em.
